Why RiceAndPeanutButter?

"So... what's with the name?  Why rice and peanut-butter?" is the question I am asked most often by new visitors to RiceAndPeanutButter.  I started blogging just before I headed down to Oregon for my second season at Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch.  I wanted a means of keeping people updated about my ordinary, mundane, every-day, hum-drum life.  Don't get me wrong - I love adventure!  But life's greatest moments are also its most ordinary moments.  You know... like eating a peanut-butter sandwich with your best friend during recess in third grade.  Somehow, I wanted to capture that feeling - the flavour of the ordinary - in my blog.

For five years after I returned from South Korea with a bizarre gastrointestinal condition, I had to eliminate bread from my diet... no peanut-butter sandwiches for me, and rice bread is... yuck.  But I love peanut-butter!  The world's greatest comfort food, it evokes all sorts of nostalgic emotion.  How else is one to eat peanut-butter except peanut-butter and toast and peanut-butter sandwiches?  On apples, celery, and bananas, and by the spoonful - yes.  But I also started eating it with rice.  I'll even let you in on the secret family recipe:

Rice and Peanut-Butter
2 cups short-grain brown rice (cooked)
1/4 cup peanut-butter
Microwave for 3 minutes.  Stir and enjoy.

And so www.riceandpeanutbutter.blogspot.com was born, because life is chock-full of ordinary, extraordinary, beautiful, and boring moments, and we're fools if we forget that each moment, no matter how mundane, contains its own beauty.
